The community of Wugularr, also known as Beswick is situated approximately 118km south east of Katherine and 31 km east of the neighbouring of community Burunga. The community lies on the banks of the Waterhouse River, a tributary of the Roper River system in Southern Arnhem Land. The area is prone to periodic flooding during the wet season.
Wugularr is situated completely within Aboriginal Land, and under the Northern Territory Government’s Aboriginal Land Act requires all visitors permission from the local Jawoyn traditional owners prior to entry. Wugularr is on Jawoyn Country, which broadly occupies all lands around Katherine in a roughly triangular area that extends from Mataranka in the south along the Stuart Highway in a north westerly direction to near Pine creek and in the east to Bulman. The Jawoyn lands completely enclose the town of Katherine, Nitmiluk National Park and partially enclose the southern areas of Kakadu national park taking in the headwaters of the Mary, Katherine and South Alligator river systems. The community of Wugularr is home to about 450 people.
